Educator / Mentor
NEVER GIVE UP & BELIEVE IN YOURSELF
Arlene illuminated her talents with boundless joy as an educator in the art of Songwriting, starting out at the prestigious international school in Hollywood, Musicians Institute (M.I.). She began her journey sharing all her experience, creative spark, and wisdom from all that she had learned, working with some really gifted musicians from all over the world. She set up their Songwriting program with her partner in crime, Barry Kaye, and a wonderful woman who owned the school at the time, Becky Hicks. M.I. is a revered International Rock & Roll school, and continues to provide thousands of global musicians, singers, songwriters, engineers with such a vast education in the world of Music to this day. It was very fortunate for her to be a part of this school in its early stages. One of the things she loved the most about teaching at Musician’s Institute were the awesome “seminars” she brought to the school with such icons as, Kenny Loggins, David Foster, Peter Frampton & Jimmy Waldo (New England and Quiet Riot) Michael McDonald, Richard Page (Mr. Mister), David Pack (Ambrosia), the late and brilliant Paul Buckmaster …the list goes on & on. These talented artists were not only extremely successful in their careers, but incredibly generous with their time to bring an “inside look” at their personal creative process. It was so inspiring for everyone, and she is grateful to have created these wonderful seminars.
Expanding her reach, she became an integral part of UCLA Extension/Arts Department and has been teaching Songwriting there for decades (to present) as an Adjunct Professor. It was great for Arlene to have Guy Thomas coming in as a guest teacher. Once again, some brilliant musicians/Artists joined her as guest speakers like Steve Ferrone (Drummer/Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers- Average White Band and more); Brian Malouf, engineer extraordinaire(worked with hundreds of fantastic Artist like Michael Jackson, Train, Queen, Pearl Jam, to name a few). The brilliant Artist/killer guitar player/Producer Marc Bonilla (band Toy Matinee, solo albums on Warner Bros., Keith Emmerson and more) and so many more gifted artists/guests. Being very passionate about teaching, it was an honor for her to receive the “Dean’s Distinguished Instructor Award”, which she is very proud of.
On a business note, because of her extensive background in A&R, Music Supervision/licensing etc. she utilizes the last 2 weeks of her class to get into the business side of the music Industry! It is so important that the students are fully prepared to have the big picture of how to navigate the “ups and downs” of the creative process, along with some knowledge of the business end.
As a MENTOR, she has stayed in touch with many of her beloved students through the years and it is an honor to mentor, encourage and watch their creative lives grow. With all her teaching experience and mentorship, she always tries to encourage these artistic souls to hold on to hope, never give up, and most of all, believe in themselves!
